How political parties decide who you can vote for

This morning on NBC news, the reporters were discussing a book that seemed to ask why a woman has not been elected President of the USA. I believe part of the reason is that the two largest political parties only want to win the Presidency at all costs. Having a President from their party has many benefits. Special interest groups and lobbyists contribute heavily to the two political parties. When that party's candidate wins, then those lobbyists and special interest groups will basically have access to the president. The party's put forth candidates based on that candidate's loyalty to the party and the best chance of winning, and not on who will do the best job of running our country. This results in many Americans voting for a candidate for the presidency as "the lesser of two evils".

The people representing you in Washington (in fact, all elected officials) should be the best you can find. Not just the ones the major political parties offer. Did you know that over 1000 people ran for president in 2020? Almost assuredly some of those 1000 candidates would have done a better job than we have seen our elected officials do in the last 20 years.
